The practice of Hospitality creates a safe, open space where a friend or stranger can enter and experience the welcome of God in another. (Adele Ahlberg Calhoun)
“Stay on good terms with each other, held together by love. Be ready with a meal or a bed when it’s needed. Why, some have extended hospitality to angels without ever knowing it!” Hebrews 13:1
“They followed a daily discipline of worship in the Temple followed by meals at home, every meal a celebration, exuberant and joyful, as they praised God. People in general liked what they saw. Every day their number grew as God added those who were saved.” Acts 2:46-47
Ways to practice:
- Receive the hospitality of the God. God has invited us into relationship. Meditate on “The Hospitality of Abraham’ icon by Rublev. https://www.soulshepherding.org/enjoy-the-hospitality-of-the-trinity-with-rublevs-icon/
- Share what you have – a home, food, a car, possessions with others as a way of expressing the love and welcome of God to each of us.
- Invite someone to your home for a meal.
- Invite someone standing on the outside of a conversation group to join.
- Serve with an organization that welcomes refugees and immigrants.
- Receive hospitality from others – accept others’ invitations.
What results might we expect?
- Living the truth that all you have belongs to God.
- Showcasing God’s welcoming heart to the world.
- Providing safe places for people in an unsafe world.
- Loving people rather than impressing them.
“Hospitality means primarily the creation of free space where the stranger can enter and become a friend instead of an enemy. Hospitality is not to change people, but to offer them space where change can take place.” Henri Nouwen
